Social Emotional Learning

Initiative
CHIME’s mission invites you to “imagine a world where all children are equally valued, a world where all children are seen as a gift.”
Part of achieving that mission means ensuring that all of our students’ social-emotional needs are met. At CHIME, we know that students are able to learn best when they feel safe and cared for. We make the extra effort to explicitly teach social and play skills, cooperation, and how to be a good friend. We do this by embedding supported strategies, like mindfulness and restorative practices, into our daily classroom routines. Research shows that students are less likely to harm each other when they are in community with each other. CHIME teachers build positive classroom cultures by facilitating community circles that help students get to know each other in deeper ways than they might otherwise.
We know that modeling and teaching respect and responsibility helps to foster strong character development in our students. CHIME uses school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) to help engage and motivate students.

Our Social Emotional Learning team is composed of school psychologists, counselors, social workers, administrators and mentors who meet regularly to ensure targeted and appropriate support for our student body, as well as our teachers. Teachers have access to additional coaching and support through edwell, an organization that provides a wellness platform to connect, empower, and support educators in order to improve their well-being. We know that when our teachers are cared for and at their best, then students have the best school experiences.
CHIME leverages our partnership with CSUN and benefits from access to counseling services provided by the university’s Mitchell Family Counseling Clinic. This allows CHIME to connect students and families with therapeutic services both on our own campus and at CSUN.
CHIME has long been the gold standard of inclusive practices in education. We know that academic success can be achieved only when a student’s social-emotional self is honored.
